Alex Kanter relies on a happy work environment to put his best foot forward

Alex Kanter first heard about Freshworks on LinkedIn.

After working at a corporate technology consulting firm for a few years, Alex was looking for a new challenge, a new environment—and “a new mountain to climb”. Browsing through open solution engineering roles, he came across Freshworks. Once he read about the company’s work culture, Alex was sure he would be a great fit.

Alex joined Freshworks at the tail-end of March 2021 following a quick interview and onboarding process. While many organizations made it a prerequisite for a solution engineer (SE) to have prior SE experience, his manager, Casey Steenport, prevailed. He saw in Alex the drive to perform at a high level with his skills in technology, business, and design thinking strategy.

Before joining Freshworks, Alex was living in California. He knew San Francisco wasn’t going to be his long-term home if he wanted to grow his career and achieve his personal goals. So, when the solution engineer role opened up in Denver, Colorado, it was “a very easy sell” for him to pack up his things—which mostly consisted of his two mountain bikes—and move to the Mile High City. His manager offered him a full week off for relocation. Alex used it to stop over in Park City on the way and enjoy the outdoors as well as get comfortable in his new home before starting work.

At Freshworks, Alex’s background as a tour guide in college helped him with “the lung capacity to speak all day with a variety of folks.” It also helped him better understand what it means to approach any presentation with empathy for the audience.

But that was just the start of it.

In a watercooler chat for ‘A Freshworker’s Life’ series, Alex opens up about his passions and motivations and throws light on the support he received from his coworkers in helping him put his best foot forward. Continue reading to know more about this passionate Freshworker.

Alex’s dad always advised him to surround himself with people smarter than him—because of the opportunity to learn and grow. Following his advice, this Freshworker made it a priority to meet with the sales development teams to learn about upcoming deals and strategize on a daily basis. He would also get in touch with different product teams to make sure that his knowledge was up to date and to also share any feedback that he received from customers.

Alex’s fervor for delighting customers helped him go beyond walls and fences.

Our customers come from all walks of life, and it’s a fulfilling opportunity to meet them and understand their wants and needs before showing them a product that I believe will truly make their day-to-day operations faster, easier, and better.

Alex describes the work culture at Freshworks as “empathetic, driven, and passionate.” He offers powerful insights into the subtle balance between work and life in our modern times.

Sometimes, bringing your best self to work also means being able to step away when you need to. Last year, when I suffered the tragic passing of a close relative, I was given space and time away from work to spend time with family and also to speak with other coworkers who had been through similar experiences. With everyone’s support, I was able to come back to work reenergized.

Among the many reasons Alex joined Freshworks was the opportunity to take on newer challenges outside his line of work. His proudest moment at work was seeing his face on the side of the Nasdaq building when Freshworks went public in the fall of 2021. Counting on the support from his friends and family, he says that he’s incredibly proud of all the Freshworkers who came before him and “laid the groundwork for such a momentous achievement.”
