Find out which area code belongs to what provinces or territories in Canada, and learn how to get a virtual phone number in these areas.
Canada, comprised of ten provinces with three territories to the North, is served by 40 area codes. Ontario has the most number of area codes (14) while Yukon, Nunavut and the Northeast Territories are together served by one. On this page, you’ll learn about:
Here is a list of all area codes and their overlays in Canada. These area codes are appended to landline numbers, cell phone numbers as well as virtual phone numbers.
The country code of Canada is +1. Other countries/regions having the same country code are the USA and its unincorporated territories like Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands and United States Virgin Islands.
International dialing was not established when the first telephone system and the North American Numbering Plan were established in Canada and the US. For this reason, all countries and territories under the NANP carry +1 as their country code.
Phone numbers in Canada consist of 11 digits — the 1-digit country code, a 3-digit area code, a 3-digit central office or exchange code, and a 4-digit subscriber number.
To call Canada from the US, you need to dial the ‘national format’ — the 1-digit country code + 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number. This is called eleven-digit dialing.
Area code 917 is not a Canadian area code. It is a US area code originally created for cellular-pager-voicemail devices, and it serves all the boroughs of New York City.
Area code 600 is a location-agnostic area code used for satellite communication in Canada.
