512 area code serves Austin, the capital of the U.S state of Texas, and its suburbs. It is one of the first area codes assigned along with the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) in 1947. Originally, it covered most of south-central Texas. After a couple of splits, it finally assumed its current size in 1999. A new area code, the 737, was introduced in 2013 as an overlay to 512 to generate more telephone numbers in Austin. Both the area codes together serve around 50 municipalities including Bastrop, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Staples, and Walburg. The 512 area code falls under Central Time (CT) zone. In summer months, the territory follows CDT or Central Daylight Time (GMT-5) when daylight saving time is being observed. It follows CST or Central Standard Time (GMT-6) during the remaining part of the year. Don’t forget to keep the time zone in mind when you are making long distance calls to Austin.
