512 area code serves Austin, the capital of the U.S state of Texas, and its suburbs. It is one of the first area codes assigned along with the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) in 1947. Originally, it covered most of south-central Texas. After a couple of splits, it finally assumed its current size in 1999. A new area code, the 737, was introduced in 2013 as an overlay to 512 to generate more telephone numbers in Austin. Both the area codes together serve around 50 municipalities including Bastrop, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Staples, and Walburg. Area codes 512 and 737 can be attached to both landline and cell phone numbers, as well as virtual phone numbers. There are around 320 area codes in the United States of America.
Texas is the second-biggest state in the United States. Originally, it was assigned four area codes when the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) was introduced in October, 1947. At present, it is served by 27 codes. The table above shows a complete list of Texas area codes and the territories they serve.
Seven-digit dialing (7-digit telephone number without area code)
Ten-digit dialing (3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number)
Eleven-digit dialing or the national format (1-digit country code + 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number)
If you fall within the same area code, you can sometimes make a call by dialing only the seven-digit telephone number. However, ten digit dialing (512 + 7-digit telephone number) has been made mandatory for area code 512 since June 2013. To make long-distance calls within United States, you need to use the national format, also known as 11-digit dialing, by adding the trunk code 1 (1 + 512 + 7-digit telephone number).
The 512 area code falls under Central Time (CT) zone. In summer months, the territory follows CDT or Central Daylight Time (GMT-5) when daylight saving time is being observed. It follows CST or Central Standard Time (GMT-6) during the remaining part of the year. Don’t forget to keep the time zone in mind when you are making long distance calls to Austin. Working hours are usually set for businesses or helplines based on the local time zone.
In 2016, CNBC named Austin as the #1 place in America to start a business. Today, this Texan city has the reputation of being home to one of the fastest growing tech communities in the US. The low cost of living along with the ease of access to government institutions make it easier to establish new ventures in this state capital. There are also economic initiatives like the Emerging Technology Fund that help fund tech and product companies. “Ditch the Valley, run for the hills” is what they say about starting up in Austin. :)
