According to the North American Number Plan (NANP), 347 is one of the four telephone area codes for Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island in New York City. It also serves the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. The other area codes for these four boroughs and Marble Hill are 718, 917, and 929. It was added in 1999 to create more phone numbers for the increasing number of residences, offices, and businesses in these four boroughs.
Although it’s hard to imagine now, New York City was served by only area code 212 until 1984. In 1984, the 718 area code was introduced to serve Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Bronx and Marble Hill were removed from the 212 numbering plan and appended to 718 in 1992. New York City’s first cellular/pager area code, the 917, was introduced in the same year. All cellphone numbers issued until then were migrated to 917 area code.
In 1999, two new area codes, 646 and 347 were introduced to serve Manhattan and the rest of the boroughs respectively. The sixth one (929 area code) came into effect in 2011, generating over 23 million phone numbers. Finally in 2015, the youngest area code, 332, was introduced.
To make a call to a 347 area code phone number, you need to perform eleven-digit dialing (1 + 347 + 7-digit telephone number). If you are making the call from a phone number with the same area code, you can perform ten-digit dialing (347 + 7-digit telephone number).
Area code 347 follows Eastern Time just like the rest of New York state. During spring and summer months, this corresponds to EDT or Eastern Daylight Time (GMT-4) since daylight saving will be in effect. In the fall and winter months, New York City follows EST or Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5). Keep this in mind when you are making a long-distance call to New York City.
