How IT pros can spot AI imposters

CIO Prasad Ramakrishnan weighs in on ‘AI washing’ and choosing the correct AI solution

Citing Freshworks research that reveals 71% of IT practitioners now use AI to support their workloads, Freshworks CIO Prasad Ramakrishnan writes in his most recent column for Forbes Technology Council that this growing reliance is forcing IT leaders to be “more discerning and less easily swayed” by marketing claims of AI superpowers. 

With so many companies marketing new software as AI-driven, Ramakrishnan warns that CIOs need to differentiate bona fide AI tools from imposters. The emphasis on AI accountability, he adds, will streamline the development of solutions that boost productivity and value. 

“IT practitioners now exercise caution and demand concrete evidence before embracing new AI-driven tools," he writes. Not all chatbots, for example, use AI technologies like natural language processing. Some may just rely on pre-programmed responses or rule-based algorithms. He advises IT practitioners to test a chatbot internally and monitor its performance before deploying it to real customers.
