Carl Price: Transforming business development with customer delight

Carl Price joined Freshworks with a mission—to inspire and deliver world-class business-to-business (B2B) prospecting with innovative technology and human engagement.

As the Global Vice President of Pipeline and Business Development, Carl spends his days collaborating on new strategies to build and drive customer delight.

I’m a builder at heart, and since Freshworks is at the ‘big build’ stage with smart and enthusiastic folks across the globe, it’s my mission to add value and help the business development organization grow and scale.

Evolution and growth of business development

Business development is at the heart of any SaaS company’s growth story.

It involves ideas, initiatives, and activities that help make a business better. From pursuing growth opportunities and identifying new prospects to converting leads into customers who can benefit from good software, business development—if done right— grows revenue, expands the business, and increases profitability.

Over the years, business development has gone through a world of change. Gone are the days when “fax machines were cool” and “business development representatives would literally call from phone books.” In the wake of newer technologies and evolving customer expectations, “business development has become more sophisticated, more data-driven, and a hundred times more interesting than ever before,” says Carl.

Quote from Carl Price, saying: The tech industry is moving fast. It’s volatile and changes shape almost every year, and business development is at the forefront of this evolution,” says Carl, throwing light on why Freshworks has rebranded business development representatives as business development managers. “At Freshworks, we do much more than just represent. We are no longer the ugly stepchild of sales or marketing. We are an executive function, we have a seat at the C-level table, and we are seeing longer retention rates, higher remuneration, and less transition to other go-to-market roles.

Carl’s roadmap for business development managers at Freshworks

Business development managers (BDMs) represent the human touch of prospecting.

With the rise in business technology and customer needs for software that they can love, business development has become a wildly popular career choice. “I’m your living proof that people can now have a fascinating career in business development,” he adds.

While marketing creates campaigns to drive awareness, most modern-day customers want something extra before they can decide—and this is where BDMs step in.

He says that “you need to be highly skilled, adaptable, and focused on customer delight” to succeed in this field. At Freshworks, his team is trained to diversify their channels, leverage intent signals, elevate social selling, work on traditional marketing methods like emails and phone calls, and experiment with video formats.

Carl shares his own roadmap for folks looking to grow in the field of business development.

How to grow as a business development manager involves understanding the buyer’s journey, sharpening your collaboration skills, being passionate about prospecting, practicing learning on the job, taking mentorship seriously, practicing accountability, celebrating your wins, and pausing for well-being.

Carl describes the work culture at Freshworks as “fun, diverse, and supportive.” In a watercooler chat for ‘A Freshworker’s Life’ series, he explains his motivations for inspiring high-performing teams into the ever-evolving world of business development, learning from everyone, and pausing to reflect on wellbeing. When Carl takes time off from business development, he enjoys traveling around the world. “I’m what you can call a global citizen. I’m a permanent resident of the United States, but I also have British, Australian, and Irish passports. Freshworks is a truly global organization, so I feel like I’ll have support from the business if I choose to relocate for greater impact.”

He says of his motivations: “I’m a people person, so the team is where the magic happens. My team’s superpower is diversity—ideas, experiences, and ways of thinking. I believe it’s through our diversity that we’ll outshine our competitors in empowering our customers with intuitive solutions that delight them and add value to their daily lives.”
